2 years at Ephesoft

Dharmesh Shah Employee SpotlightBorn and raised in Mumbai, India, Dharmesh grew up wanting to be a doctor, but ended up finding his path in technology. He attended MIT (Maharashtra Institute of Technology), part of University of Pune, and achieved a degree in Computer Engineering. In 1998, HCL Technologies, an international company, who brought him over to the United States to work in their Orange County office. In pursuit of higher education and having a well-rounded background, he got his Master in Business Administration (MBA) from Webster University. “California and Mumbai are very similar. They are both melting pots, cosmopolitan and on the coast, so it was easy to fit right in,” explained Dharmesh.

Dharmesh was quickly hired by FileNet, which was acquired by IBM, and he built up significant experience in the data capture industry as a Quality Assurance (QA) professional. He found that while IBM was a large, stable company, he was ready for a new challenge with a different type of environment. “I saw a job posting for a lower level QA position at Ephesoft, but convinced management that they needed someone with more experience to take the company to the next level,” noted Dharmesh.

In 2016, he joined Ephesoft as the first US-based Lead QA Engineer and was exuberant about the opportunity. On the first day, he asked Ike Kavas, who was the CTO at that time, what did he want him to do? Ike responded that he wanted him to be productive and show him results, so Dharmesh took matters into his own hands. His goal was to reduce defect escape (also known as bug counts) down by 10-15% each year.

“When I started at Ephesoft, I really liked the small company vibe. The people who worked there were a draw. But what really impressed me was the technology, which could be installed and used in a few hours – a drastic difference from the competition,” stated Dharmesh. “The technology could work on Windows or Linux on an open source platform, which other solutions don’t often do.”

Not everything is smooth sailing and challenges do arise. “Nothing worthwhile is ever achieved without hard work and perseverance.” This quote by Swami Vivekananda is one of Dharmesh’s favorite “one-liners” that he lives by. “One of the challenges in my position was training others, especially in a global company, to think and act like a customer. I take pride in my work and make the product the best it can be through QA testing, and as we grow, it’s important to always have our customer in the forefront of the solution,” explained Dharmesh. “I like challenges and improving the overall engineering process.”

Besides the friendly atmosphere, Dharmesh enjoys playing ping pong with coworkers when he needs a break. “We are building a strong engineering team and it’s great to work with very smart people at Ephesoft.”

For fun outside of work, Dharmesh has visited about 10 national parks and enjoys hiking, traveling, being in nature, biking and kickboxing. He attends weekly Toastmaster’s public speaking sessions weekly is a certified Toastmaster Competent Communicator. He and his wife enjoy their two athletic daughters’ adventures: one is a UC Santa Barbara college ranked fencing champion who won first place for the women’s team foil 2017 Southern California and the other daughter is a dancer and competes in long-distance running at her high school.
